How excessive salt intake can impact heart

Excessive salt intake can have a significant impact on heart health. When we consume excess salt, our body retains water to maintain the proper balance of electrolytes. This results in an increased volume of blood circulating through the blood vessels, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood. Over time, this increased workload can strain the heart and lead to the development of hypertension, putting individuals at a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.

In addition to raising blood pressure, excessive salt intake can also contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. High levels of sodium in the bloodstream can trigger inflammation and oxidative stress, promoting the formation of arterial plaques. These plaques can narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart. Reduced blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscle can result in chest pain (angina) and increase the risk of a heart attack. Therefore, it is crucial to limit salt intake to maintain healthy arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Reducing salt intake is an essential step in promoting heart health. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon) of sodium per day for most adults. However, the average daily salt intake in many countries exceeds this recommendation. To lower salt intake, it is important to read food labels, limit the consumption of processed and packaged foods, and opt for fresh, whole foods whenever possible. Additionally, using herbs, spices, and other flavorings can enhance the taste of meals without relying on excessive salt. By adopting these strategies, individuals can take proactive steps to protect their heart and improve overall cardiovascular well-being.
