Did you know that around 40% of cancer cases can be prevented?

The World Environment Foundation emphasizes that many of these risk factors are within our control and are related to our lifestyle choices. The WCRF identifies several factors that play a crucial role in cancer prevention. These include avoiding smoking and tobacco use, protecting ourselves from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet with enough fiber, fruits, and vegetables while limiting red and processed meat, abstaining from alcohol consumption, engaging in recommended levels of physical activity each week, maintaining a healthy weight (typically a body mass index below 25), and protecting ourselves from infections like HPV, HIV, and hepatitis.

Smoking, in particular, poses a significant risk. Hazel Cheeseman from the Action on Smoking and Health explains that smokers expose their bodies to a mix of cancer-causing substances, increasing their chances of developing at least 16 different types of cancer. Furthermore, being overweight or obese can contribute to the development of 13 different types of cancer.

By understanding and addressing these risk factors, we can take control of our health and reduce the chances of developing cancer. Making healthier choices, such as quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, and protecting ourselves from infections, can make a significant difference in preventing cancer.
